The University was established in 2013 and the first cohort of students were registered in 2014. The University offers three programmes and is dedicated to providing students with a high-quality education.

Minister Nzimande appointed an Interim Council in October 2013 to establish the foundation for the University. The Lowveld College of Agriculture has been incorporated into the University of Mpumalanga as of 1 January 2015. The inauguration of the Vice-Chancellor occurred on 30 May 2015. The first Chancellor of the University, Honourable Deputy President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa, was appointed in January 2016. In July 2021, Justice Mandisa Maya, President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa (SCA), was appointed as the second Chancellor of UMP.
